STATE
OF SALES

The State of Sales right now….

Your buyer has used your product before your rep ever called. At OpenAI, that is every single deal. Almost everyone in the room has already opened ChatGPT.

Most categories are heading the same way. Buyers arrive mid-experiment, half-informed and fully confident. The sellers who win are the ones who treat that familiarity as the opening, not the obstacle.

THE STATE OF SALES LENS

This is the playbook OpenAI's enterprise sales team runs when the buyer walks in already using the product. Four plays, stripped to the operational core so your team can run them this week.

01 · Retire the proof of concept

The long evaluation cycle is dying. Buyers can test ideas themselves in hours, so a 12-week POC now tells them something they already know.

Replace it with three conversations:

  1. Best practice. Show them how the strongest organisations in their industry are actually adopting.

  2. Vision. Help them see where this goes beyond the first experiment.

  3. Adoption. Move them from tinkering to a meaningful rollout.

The days of needing very long proofs of concept are changing. Many customers come into conversations already informed and already experimenting.

RUN IT

Audit your open opportunities. Anywhere you are still explaining the product to someone who has already tested it, switch the conversation to best practice and adoption.

02 · Agree with the familiarity, then sell one level down

Personal use and enterprise adoption are entirely different sales. When a buyer says they already know your category, they are usually right about the surface and wrong about the depth.

The depth is where the deal lives: security, governance, use cases, change management, integration and how value gets measured.

Using AI as an individual and adopting it responsibly across an enterprise are very different things.

RUN IT

Never argue with a buyer's familiarity. Agree, then move one level down. "You clearly know the product. Can we talk about what rolling it out across 4,000 people actually looks like?"

03 · Shrink the frame to one workflow

Plenty of buyers are excited in principle and frozen in practice. The scale of the opportunity is exactly what stops them starting. The fix is never a bigger vision. It is a smaller question.

You do not need every part of your AI strategy fully defined before you begin. Start with a specific problem. That makes the opportunity tangible and gives the customer a way to build confidence.

RUN IT

When a buyer says the strategy is still being worked out, ask one question: which single workflow causes your team the most friction this quarter? Sell into that. Nothing else.

04 · Automate the admin, protect the human

Inside OpenAI, reps run AI as a personal chief of staff: follow-ups, account research, forecasts, tailored customer presentations. The admin around selling shrinks and the recovered hours go back into people.

The rule underneath it: use AI to remove friction from the work you already do, never to replace the things that make you exceptional.

The core of selling has not changed. It is still about connecting with people, understanding their problems, and finding solutions that help solve them.

RUN IT

Have every rep list the admin they did last week. Anything that did not involve understanding a customer is a candidate for automation. Reinvest the hours in live conversations.

THE ONE THING

Familiarity is the opening, not the obstacle. Agree with what they know, then sell what they don't.
