THE INTERVIEW

WEDNESDAY

STATE
OF SALES

The State of Sales right now….

We've evolved quickly. The salespeople succeeding now are hyper relevant: the solutions provided are very specific to the persona and the customer/prospect's problem, with measurable results attached. Salespeople are doing a lot more with a lot less.

David Watts, Senior Commercial Account Executive @ Snowflake

THE SETUP

David Watts is a Senior Commercial Account Executive at Snowflake, the AI data cloud company, where enterprise deals run into the millions and are driven initially by a streamlined selling team. He talked us through how AI made small teams dangerous, and why transactional SaaS sales with smaller deal sizes and limited upsell/cross-sell is the riskiest seat in the industry.

THE 60-SECOND VERSION

  • Hyper relevance wins enterprise. Transactional SaaS sales (smaller deal sizes) with limited upsell/cross-sell opportunity is the seat most at risk.

  • A streamlined account team can run a book worth millions when internal AI capabilities help answer the technical questions.

  • Open with a hypothesis. Wrong is recoverable. Silence is fatal.

  • Your name is the asset. Sales is a small world and integrity compounds.

3 THINGS YOU'LL TAKE AWAY FROM THIS

  1. The hyper-relevance research motion that opens enterprise conversations

  2. How a streamlined team uses AI to drive better business outcomes, help with technical questions and how AI gives commercial teams technical answers when an SE isn't in the room

  3. A hypothesis technique that gets silent prospects talking

TOGETHER WITH PROSPEO

Hyper relevance falls apart if the contact is wrong. Prospeo triple-verifies every email across a 300M-contact database, and Clay's independent test of eight providers ranked it first for accuracy. Do the research, then make sure it actually lands. Try it for free here →

01 · Hyper relevance is the whole game now

David's read on the market splits cleanly in two. Enterprise selling is getting sharper: teams use AI research to arrive with the individual and company's problem already mapped. Low-ticket SaaS is another story.

If your product is a lower deal size with limited revenue expansion, I see that as a massive risk. Buyers will use AI to research, run their own POC, and at that point a salesperson isn't needed.

Where AI genuinely helps is the research phase, never the outreach blast. "Four years ago people were doing mass email campaigns. Where it's really helping salespeople is research." His warning for the shortcut crowd was blunt: automated slop gives you and your company a bad name while your hyper-relevant competitor takes the meeting.

DO THIS THIS WEEK

For your top three target accounts, write one page each: what they're losing or risking without your product, what the competitors are using if any, and what measurable result you could help them achieve (reduce cost, increase revenue, reduce risk etc). That page is your outreach.

02 · The streamlined enterprise team

At Snowflake, David runs his book with one solutions engineer. Internal AI makes that possible; in their case CoWork, which is an AI agent sitting on thousands of internal knowledge/product documents, connected across their sales stack: call intelligence like Gong, CRM, etc. As it's built on Snowflake, Snowflake Horizon provides the governance and security layer, so access and data protection are enforced natively, allowing them to trust the outputs.

I can get an objection that's way too technical for me. I can use CoWork to show me how Snowflake can potentially help, or can't. So we don't waste time.

The same engine does account research: it maps a prospect's public information against product knowledge and comes back with likely use cases before he's had the first call. His broader stack advice follows the same logic: one platform doing many things beats five overlapping tools with low adoption. His must-haves: call recording (Gong), Sales Navigator, contact data, and a proper research assistant, whether that's Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini.

STEAL THIS

Build one internal knowledge base your AI tools can actually read. The value of every technical answer compounds from there.

03 · The wrong hypothesis is better than the right question

David's favourite conversation opener is a stated opinion, held loosely.

Come in with a hypothesis. It might be wrong, but that will start the conversation. "The reason other companies work with me is they had this particular problem. Is that right?" No, that's not right, but now they're speaking.

He pairs it with unglamorous research: finding what your customers truly think of your product, such as Reddit, to learn how his product is perceived and which objections are coming, then getting ahead of them before they're raised. And he owns the contradiction in his own advice: slow down on account research and hypothesis, move quick and fail fast on new approaches.

TRY THIS ON YOUR NEXT CALL

Open with "Here's what we typically see with companies like yours" and let them correct you. Correction is engagement.

04 · Your name is the asset. Protect it

Asked what he'd tell someone early in their revenue career, David went straight past tactics to reputation.

Integrity and honesty, always. Put the customer first. Your customers' problems need to become your problems. Sales is actually a pretty small world. If your name gets tarnished, that follows you.

The rest of his list is a career playbook in miniature: choose your manager as carefully as your company, praise colleagues to their managers, stay genuinely curious, be confidently humble, and detach from the outcome. His end goal for every account explains the whole philosophy: "I want to be seen as a partner, not a tech vendor. I want to be the person they call when they've got another problem."

THE MOVE

Send one note this week to a colleague's manager about great work. It costs two minutes and builds the network that closes deals later.

THE ONE THING

Be the partner they call with the next problem, never the vendor they renew.
